2011/08 Changes to the Criminal Code
The National Council of the Slovak Republic (Národná rada Slovenskej republiky) has approved an Amendment to the Criminal Code which modifies options and broadens grounds for filing appeals, revises the duties concerning excused absence by persons obliged to be involved in legal proceedings, and introduces further changes which we cover in a full article in the ULC Čarnogurský PRO BONO newsletter.

2011/08 Illegal work and employment
The area of illegal work and employment in the Slovak Republic is regulated by the Act No. 82/2005 Coll. on Illegal Work and Employment. The act was recently amended because of the need to transpose European Parliament and Council Directives Nos. 2009/50/EC and 2009/52/EC into the Slovak legal code.

2011/08 Termination of specific rental relationships
A new law on the termination and arrangement of some rental relationships aims to create a legislative mechanism which will terminate state interventions into the use of private property and will enable Slovakia gradually to comply with the conditions commonly applied in other democratic countries. The act determines conditions and terms of termination of some rental relationships in which current rental prices are subject to regulation.

2011/08 Amendment to the Act on Investment Aid
This amendment has introduced changes which are expected to increase the amount of investment into the Slovak Republic. It has cut by half the minimum investment necessary in order to obtain investment aid and has extended the maximum term for tax allowances that can be granted to investors to 10 years.

2011/08 Amendment to the Act on Gambling Games
This amendment has introduced new restrictions into the area of operating gambling games. Levies on gambling games will increase, gambling will only be permitted in gambling premises, and smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited in gambling premises. Aside from these changes, the amendment also revises sanctions for administrative delicts and authorizes municipalities to forbid the operation of gambling games.

2011/08 Being prepared in Parliament – Changes to legal aid to persons in material need
The proposed Amendment to the Act No. 327/2005 Coll. on Provision of Legal Aid to Persons in Material Need should strengthen its precautionary function and improve the accessibility of services provided to persons in material need by the Legal Aid Centre (Centrum právnej pomoci). The proposal extends the accessibility of the services of the Legal Aid Centre by introducing services that can be offered to physical persons whose income is higher than the limit necessary to qualify for free legal aid as stipulated in the current law, provided that they make a 20-percent contribution.
